First, because I'm always asked this question: what are three essential books for writers?
These are my three. None of them are per se books on writing. Two are books ostensibly for actors, the third on film editing. Nevertheless, I think each of them has important lessons for writers, and I give them my unreserved recommendation.

“Writing is a process of discovery of what you really do know. You can't limit yourself in advance to what you know, because you don't know everything you know.”

by David Mamet

“It is the audience that goes to the theatre to exercise its emotion – not the actor, the audience. And when they go, having paid to be moved, they exercise their right to their money’s worth.”
